 Feedback

Good

  • Music choice
  • Sound effects
  • Transitions
  • The montage
  • Use of black and white

Needs Work/ Suggestions
  • Put in an after effect at first flash forward point
  • Change music at the point of running
  • Linger on the end image
  • End on title
  • Credits at the very end - after showing title
  • Opportunities for moments of impact when suspense can build
  • Music more suspenseful in intense parts
What I will do

What implications that will take place since getting this feedback is I will be adding in intense music during the chase scene, fast pace music and this will mean the audience will feel the tension from what is happening in the scene. Another change I will be making Is that I will be keeping the last image of Kevin as a close up, on the screen for a little longer. This is so that the audience can really resonate with it and feel more impacted by it. One comment said to make the music louder so I have done that already as a simple start to all the changes I will be making

After effects

 Lumetri Colour

I would want to use this during the scene where Carol is murdered and this is to increase the colour saturation especially on the blood so that it can easily contrast with the scene that takes place right after which is dark-based, with shadows and low lights. This would make the mood change faster, meaning the audience will feel almost a heart drop.

Motion blue

This I want to use for when the logo is shown so that it adds instead of the video being more choppy with the logo. The motion blue would make the logo being shown look more casual instead of being a whole separate thing.

vignette

during the scene where Kevin looks at himself in the mirror, this would add to the mood of it and make it seem more intense and glum.

Opening Sequences

–What is the purpose of Opening Sequences?
The purpose of an opening sequence is to set the mood/atmosphere of the movie that will play. The very basic purpose of the opening sequence is to play out/ give the necessary credits. In many opening sequences, the film makers add key information as part of the story line, perhaps backstory or setting the theme, giving some context for the film. This attracts the attention of the audience and gets them to be more curious about what that is shown may lead to.

–What is the difference between Opening Credits and a Title Sequence?
The opening credits are generally played out during the title sequence. The opening credits are showing the names of the directors, key cast members, producers and studios. The are usually played over a title sequence which is a series of shots generally with significant meaning in the film. These shots are used to help showcase the credits. Here the producers will really take advantage of the way sound and tone affects both the audience and the mood of the setting for the film initially.

–What techniques can be employed in an opening sequence?
A technique used in opening sequences is, movie poster inspired typography. This is where the titles rolling are flashed on screen in a font that is similar to what would be shown in a movie poster. The flashes of words captivates the audience and forces them to stay with their eyes on the screen as one missed second is causing a huge miss in what is said. Another. technique used during the opening sequence is CGI, many film companiees have CGI created motion pictures to grab the interest of the audience. The CGI created motion picture usually is an image or symbol of something that will be important to note in the film, for example a batman symbol, this is a very basic example and this being shown on screen instantly lets the audience know what to expect.

–Research a modern Thriller and a Hitchcock film of your choice to use as examples.
The modern thriller of choice is the film gone girl and the Hitchcock film i will be writing about is virtigo

–Demonstrate how both films achieve the purpose of the Opening Sequence, and contrast their techniques
In Gone girls opening sequence they open by showing their movie companys logo with their iconic soundtrack. The recognisability of the sound track of the 21 first century fox logo play out, is part of the reason why the opening scene is so important, people pay more attention to what they are familiar with and so this means people are more likely to be more emotionally involved in this film. The production companys title introduction for Vertigo is in black and white, this reflects the age of the film and the time it was made. The logo is still but fades in, there is no dramatic draw in for the audience, no intense CGI to keep it extravagant, just simply the logo alone. This is because around the time this film was made, there were not the right tools available to be able to create a title sequence like in the modern thriller. In the Hitchcock film, the camera is brought in for a close up shot of the characters face, this brings the audience in to the world of the film, bringing the audience into the personal space of the girl. Having this in the opening sequence is important as it is captivating and this technique of having a close up showcase the facial expressions of the character, increases the overall engagement as well. Gone girl opens up with a voice over playing out the voice in the husbands head, as her admires his wife, this brings the audience into the mind of the character, in contrast with Veritgo which brings us physically into the personal space of the character, both very intimate, in order to grasp the audiences attention. In 'gone girl' the intro is thought to be romantic, which is a play on plot considering the whole basis of their relationship comes into play later on in the movie, this also gives the audience a view of what their relationship looks like before all the chaos begins. Veritgo continues with graphics and hypnotic sort of motion pictures, whereas Gone girl focuses on showing the audience the setting, the environment the characters live in.

Bourne Identity

The film, The Bourne Identity uses a compilation of techniques taken from the different aspects of Mise en scene, editing, camera and sound, to create the film. In the scene referred to, the mise en scene is very glum, with the waters not being as blue as when shown originally in the beginning of the film, the skies are grey and the clouds are covering a majority of the light that would otherwise come through at this time of day. Another part of the mise en scene is the plethora of boats and ships in the background. The mode of transport here is portrayed in such a way that shows that not only is he physically travelling to a different place but also mentally and psychologically as well. The ship has taken him to a new place as well as a new part of his journey in life. This is both metaphorical and literal. The train is one of these modes of transport. The water represents mystery and fear of the unknown, as Bourne is in a new place he is not familiar with, this place is also unknown, relating to the theme of ‘unknowingness’, the basis of the film is played out around the idea that Jason Bourne does not even know himself, the waters relate to this with what they symbolise. Red is a colour in this movie that is recurring, the colour red in this film represents new life, it represents the future and in the train scene, the seats are red and a train is a mode of transport so the director is trying to say to the audience that the train will take him to a part of his future that will be significant, leaving behind his past. When Bourne looks back behind him the light glowing up the path is blue, blue in this film signifies his past, Jason looks back seeing his footsteps and the blue light making them visible, this is him looking back at where he has come from and overall just looking a reminiscing his past, or what he would think it to be. Figures of authority come and find him, blue also represents people of official status such as government officials and police officers. Since blue represents both Bourne's past and authority, this is foreshadowing to viewers that in the film they will show some correlation of the two, thus leading to the reveal later on, of who Bourne truly is.

In this film a wide-angle shot is used to show the entire setting of the water and the boats and this is to set the scene and allow viewers to see the bigger picture. An over the shoulder shot is used to show Bourne looking out at the pathways he could possibly take, he is taking in where he is and is making up a decision in his mind of where he has been left. When Jason Bourne has just gotten on the train, he sees himself in the reflection of the glass window next to his seat, a mirror is a reflection, a denotation of a mirror is a reflection of you and a reflection of who you are. Bourne in this part of the film does not know who he is so him looking at the mirror is a way of him looking at himself and wondering who he actually is as he has no clue so far, he is seeing a perception of himself that is incomplete. A backlit view is shown when Bourne is looking back at his footsteps and the blue light in front shows him as a silhouette and this is important in the film as the silhouette represents him not fully knowing himself and who he is as we can only see an outline of him, so can he only see an outline of who he is. A mid shot of the gun Jason Bourne is holding shows that he is only just taking in the fact that he just managed to get a gun of someone who is an official, a gun represents death, at the very point is an opportunity to end someone's life, this bullet also was something that was found in him in the beginning of the movie which also adds to giving the audience the impression that maybe his bullet too came from someone of authority. The shot of the gun on the ground represents him letting go of that idea before truly basking in it, he runs away and it is almost as if he is running away from his past.

Bourne is represented as an intelligent man as he is shown to know both English and german. This is showing that in his past he potentially has had to be aware of both languages. Jason, later on, found out he could fight well when met with police, this is all giving the audience clues as to who Bourne might be. The consistent showing up of authority in ways that are unsettling such as when they disturbed him in his sleep, the directors are showing the police as the antagonists and Bourne as the protagonist. Bourne is also shown as a strong person with fighting skills, he is able to fight off multiple people at once, this also directly relates to who we may be and what his past has taught him.

The music playing in the background of the film is calm and almost mellow, it is not upbeat or intense, it is a moment where Jason Bourne is taking in where he is, it is him having a calm mindset and him trying to figure out what his next moves are. The diegetic sound of the chatter of fishermen and the boats moving around is almost like showing and listening to all the chaos in the world yet the calm music is like what is going through Bourne's mind. In such a crazy world, he is trying to find himself, this is the idea that is given off. The music in the background is non-diegetic, the characters in the film cannot hear the sound however since music is directly related to emotion and how it affects mood, the music is a representation of how Bourne is feeling, which is neutral and calm, taking in his surroundings, In relation to the editing, there are fade transitions used to swiftly move from one scene to another, this allows for the audience to pick up on the little things that happen during the scene, this also gets the audience to focus on exactly what they intend.  Cutaways are also used to add dramatic effect.

Preliminary Task 1: Treatment

Character Names:

Mark and Lisa  are the names of the main characters and the reason these names are chosen is because in multiple movies there is a narrative surrounded around a person named Mark, the name is generally associated with someone mysterious and of odd nature. Lisa is a name associated with just the average girl, someone who is innocent and could do no wrong, so we chose these names to associate with the antagonist and protagonist of the story.

Narrative:

The narrative is about a stalker and it was chosen to be this way because there are a lot of opportunities for different film techniques and representations. We chose to have the film about a stalker that is just like any other student at first sight, he is seen as a fellow student just there to do his work, get his grades, go home and repeat. However slowly but surely his true intentions and motives are shown in unsettling ways. All meanwhile Lisa stayed as the innocent girl.

Symbolism:
Symbolism- In this film we are going to have Mark own a red backpack and this is because generally red symbolises danger and something or someone to be cautious of. Mark is not someone Lisa should befriend as he is a threat to her, the red on his backpack tells the audience he is not a good guy, well before Lisa even picks up on it. Another use of symbolism would be in the mirror scenes. A mirror represents the way you see yourself, its your reflection, a reflection of both your inwards and outward appearance, exposing emotions through facial expressions. When Mark looks at himself in the mirror he is hit with the realisation that he is really going to pull through with something like this.

Editing:

With the editing there is going to be a montage and this is so that the viewers can see that over the course of time Marks grades are getting consistently worse and it shows us that in the small time frame. This is so that the audience can get the bigger picture without having to sit through hours of footage of Mark waiting and receiving his grades. Another technique used will be cutaways which are used to add a more dramatic and intense effect.

Talent:

Kevin- the reason Kevin Harris  was chosen to be Mark was because he has the mischievous look that is required to play this role. He would be able to play the role more easily as he naturally has a resting serious face so it wouldn’t look forced. His ‘average Joe’ appearance makes for a great candidate to later turn out to be insane.

Lisa- Lisa will be played by Eshloe Roberts, Eshloe would be a great fit for this role as she by nature is hardworking and grade driven, this will be easily portrayed on screen. It is much easier to convey the emotions the character needs to be playing having when the person playing the character carries some of the traits as these are not proper actors, being able to play complete characters of intricacy.

Preliminary Task1: Brainstorm and Mood Board

 Brainstorm

Mood Board:

There are elements of frustration and an overall sense of helplessness in some of the photos selected to illustrate what the main male character is feeling internally. Though he may be smart and act like he has everything together in his life, he is struggling on the inside. The peek moment where we see this will be when he is looking at himself in his reflection in the mirror and doesn't like what he sees and who he has become. Other photos are self-explanatory in that they are school students both aiming for the dux award and naturally have this rivalry that comes with it.

Location:

Location 1: Senior Classrooms

The classroom will be where we see majority of the rivalry between the two students build. While the male lead (played by Kevin Harris) is so desperate to gain the approval of his teachers, so much that it affects his life and mental state of mind, the female lead (played by Luci Crawford) is the complete opposite. In this setting we will see her calm display of character and she easily is approved by those surrounding her and is a very likeable person naturally. The classroom is the main location for the film and the establishing shot takes place here. It is also where the male lead's life slowly starts to build up with tension and stress as he keeps getting low grades on tests and assignments , and it is here where we catch a glimpse of where and when his life begins to crumble as his mental state declines while the female student's life gets better and better with each passing day. It is interesting to note that while this place is meant to be one where people learn and enjoy themselves, it is anything but. Here, it is a competitive place where ego can become the students' downfall in their attempt to excel in their work.

Location 2: School Field

The second location is at the school field next to the school cottages on campus. This is where the peak of the action takes place as we see the male lead chase after the female lead on her way home and injure her. This is also the final scene before it cuts to black and the film finishes. This specific location was chosen as it will replicate the action of the girl walking home after school, but due to the boy's mental health deteriorating in such a way that he allows this constant feeling of failure to get the better of him and eventually is what causes him to lash out and take his anger out in the girl, whom he feels is the main problem. The field gives us a large space to work with and we can get different shots there easily as it will not be occupied by students and teachers on campus.

Location 3: Church Bathrooms

The third location we will be using is the church bathrooms. Here we can get a concept of the male lead's inner thoughts he has towards both himself and the girl who he is competing with. The lighting will be dark with half of his face covered with shadows, almost a 'rim' hue so the audience grasps the idea that he is not okay and mentally stable. The filming here will be slightly challenging as we don't want the reflection of the cameras to appear in the shot and any lighting devices used.

Location 4: Auditorium Stage

This location is only minor and is only used for one part of the scene, which is when the male lead is dreaming about the moment when he receives the dux award for all his hard work, and seeing the look on the girl's face when she sees that he won their little 'competition'. It is simply him daydreaming but still links to his dreams and what he aspires to be like. This location represents the bright future we can achieve if we try hard enough is we try to achieve this for the right reasons. Unfortunately, he does not want this for the right reasons and we will see the effect of this come to fruition later on in the scene.

Bourne Identity

The Bourne Identity is a film that focusses on showing the journey of a man who is unaware of who he is after an incident occurred. It portrays the character, Jason Bourne, as a man who is trying to escape his past and look for a new way of life that is more peaceful. Throughout this film, this is shown through all the various modes of transport that are shown, for example, cars, ships and trains. This is a visual cue that Bourne is trying to escape the clasps of his past both mentally and physically. In the film, the director uses red to represent the antagonist’s future and blue to represent the past. There are many means through which the colours are used to convey their message, an example is through light. Jason Bourne looks outwards, it is snowing and there is blue light down a pathway, almost as though is the backlight. This is the director’s way of making it known that this particular part of the scene has something to do with his future, suggesting to viewers to put the pieces together themselves. An example of where red is used to represent the future is when first introducing the woman, we see that she has red hair and a red car. This is a means of showing the audience that the Lady will be part of Bourne’s future, suggesting/foreshadowing that she will be included alongside Bourne on his journey to finding his identity. The blue light and blue on the police cars contrast with the red car and red hair of the girl to make the separation clear between the present and future. This also suggests that this car is the car that will take Bourne to his future in a sense. Another example is relating to the mise en scene where Bourne is stuck out at sea on a ship and the light reflects blue off the water and this shows us that the situation Bourne is stuck in is because of his past. The mise en scene at the beginning of the movie is with the red train seats, as previously mentioned, red represents Bourne's future, the train is a mode of transport and so the audiences expectations and assumptions would be that he takes the train to embark on a journey in the future. A shot reverse shot is used when showing Bourne looking out at sea, showing the sea and back to Bourne looking out at sea. This shows us exactly what Bourne is focused on which is where he is, we watch as his reality settles in his mind. The camera was moving in a shaky way when showing Jason Bourne stressing about on the ship, this is so that the audience can be conveyed the tension that Bourne feels in this situation. This allows us as the audience to relate more closely to the character and sypathize with him. The shakiness of the camera replicates how when you're stressed, everything is moving fast and things get blurry, the director wants us the audience to feel what Bourne is feeling.

The director uses a close up shot to focus in on the bullet wounds, as well as the process of mending up the injury. This angle is used so that the audience focusses on exactly what the film makers want, showing an intimate moment where the character is seen as vulnerable, this makes the audience feel as though they are involved in the characters life, allowing us to enter into Bourne's personal space. The bullet in itself represents danger, shows that he has been in a line of fire and portrays him as a target. A low angle shot in combination with light coming in from behind Bourne, created a backlight effect that formed a silhouette of Bourne, this is a critical part of the movie as while this shot is taken, sound is used to portray an idea and that idea is that Bourne has no idea who he is or was, he says “do you know who I am? I do not know who I am”. The silhouette is a way of showing how Bourne actually sees himself, just a person, without being able to see facial features or anything of that sort, the identity is hidden, this relates to Bourne even saying he has no idea who he is, which is the idea that is the basis of the film. An over the shoulder shot, reveals one half of his face, illuminated by window light, this visually correlates to the narrative that Bourne doesn’t know himself. Just like in the mirror how he isn’t seeing the full reflection, he feels the same inside. The mirror symbolizes Bourne searching for answers of who he is and where he is as well as where he’s going. Whilst filming inside the boat, the camera is filming in a swaying motion and this so that the directors can replicate the feelings and movements of the boat moving out at sea, this is so that we can feel more included in the world of the movie, which directly relates to the verisimilitude of the movie. Just as the boat moves with the currents of the waves, the camera moves to allow us the audience to feel what the people in the boat feel. When Bourne fights the man in the heat of the moment, who supposedly is trying to capture him, he pauses once all the men are defeated as he comes to the realisation that he is capable of fighting multiple grown men. As he grabs the gun off man, he pauses and

realises what he has just done and throws the gun onto the floor, the camera shows a close up of the gun. This forces the audience to focus on the gun, which conforms to connotation of it which relates to death and danger. As the camera pauses as a close up of the gun, the audience is given this time to take in what series of events just occurred, leaving the audience just as shocked as Bourne.

When Bourne is looking for any source of identity, the camera pans across the ID’s and passports in such a way that replicates eye movement, searching in haste. This was eyeline shot taken from the point of view of Bourne's eyes, this allows the audience to feel the stress that he feels in the sense that the camera shows it as Bourne's eyes are moving fast and all around. Just as Bourne is about to escape the building, he reaches the outside exit and looks down the ladder, this is filmed using a point of view shot, so that we see what the character sees, we see that he only has one liable option and tension builds up as the drop is steep, this heightens the engagement of the audience, as we wait to see what he does next. When Bourne realises that he has put the Woman in danger, he tells her simply she needs to change her appearance, a mirror shot is used to show the girl looking at herself after washing her hair, before the haircut. The theme of mirrors is prevalent in this film as it represents how you see yourself, represents who you are, as the girl looks at herself she realises who she is about to become and comes to accept that she will no longer be who she is today, she is about to take a new path, switch routes so she is taking one last look at herself before she's someone new as she embarks on this journey with Bourne.

As Bourne is constantly surrounded by authority, feeling like they're always watching, the authoritative figures become suspicious instead of a place to go for security and reassurance. This is important in the film as it foreshadows that the police and governmental officials will have something to do with Bourne, as otherwise they wouldn't focus on them as much. When Bourne arrives at his once home, the mise en scene shows is to feel empty and not lived in, as the interior is white and pristine, colour is a symbol life and happiness and this house lacks colour.

In the beginning of the movie we hear the diegetic sound of the wind and waves as well as thunder, this gives us a sense of where Bourne is without even having to see what is going on, on screen, this also sets the mood of the atmosphere, which is glum and dark. As lightning represents fear and sudden bursts, which directly relates to Bourne having an outburst of anger, confusion and frustration. A violin plays as non diegetic sound, plays fast during intense scene to relate to the fast pace of the scene, accentuates the level of tension during the scene. Relating to sound, throughout the film Bourne speaks German and English, this shows us the audience and characters alongside him that he is educated and intelligent, his tells us that he is not a nobody and is actually smart, he just is confused with this whole situation. When showing Bourne in a tense situation there was eerie music playing and the reason is to show that something is off, this puts the audience and shows the character on screen as on the edge. When Bourne is going around and about tense, the sound of the beat picks up pace gradually replicating a heart beat, this is so that the audience can feel the tension as the goal of the director is that the heartbeat replicated on screen, will have the audiences slowly match up with the one in the film, which will in turn have the audience more emotionally involved into the film as the sound is messing with their heartbeat which is directly related to how they feel. When the Girl is recalling Jason Bourne's instructions as given to her, the thoughts are played out as non diegetic sound, this is so that we can be put into the mind of the character and feel almost as though we are her. During Bourne's flashback, the voices echoed with recall, this is emphasizing what is said, almost repeating what is said so that it sticks with him. This is showing the information slowly coming back to him on who he is, the repetition is a means of conveying the memories getting more and more vivid. This is a critical part of the film as it is where Bourne's identity is finally being revealed and this is what has been worked towards, the entire film.

In relation to the editing, there is a transition fade to black in the beginning of the film when showing the mise en scene of the ocean. This is so that the audience is easily and smoothly eased into being shown the next part of the film without it being straight cut to which would seem choppy and decreases the emotional involvement of the audience with the film. Cut aways are used throughout the film and this is used to slow the movement of the film and this increases tension, as we the audience eagerly wait for the next part of this series of events to take place. When Bourne is forming the plan on where to go and when, there is a map overlay edited on to the screen, while there is action going on in the background, this is so that we can see that they are searching everywhere it seems. When showing Bourne's flashback where he recalls what he has done in the past and who that might make him, the memories are shown with the camera flashes that replicate flix picture reels, all while there memories are shown as the videos are shaky, representing the fact that the memories are hazy. This lets us the audience know that he is not aware of his entire identity however its all coming back to him.

Relating to the conventions, the iconography of the explosions which represent things blowing up out of proportion just like throughout the film. Representations are changed throughout the film, first the girl is seen simple and feminine as she is cleaned up pristine and dresses semi formally, she is seen as irrational when she gets mad at Bourne. Bourne is seen as straight forward, emotionless and almost robotic like. The contrast between Bourne's mechanic feel, and the girls human like nature brings relatability, contrasting also between irrational and rational. This relates to the ideology that men are strong and women are weak whether it is mentally or physically. Over the course of the film we are shown the woman picks up courage and slowly makes herself more useful and takes on challenges she wouldn't have done otherwise, as she chooses to stay alongside Bourne and help him through.
