 notes on video

establishing shots

  • An establishing shot is perfect for transitioning to a new scene
  • shows the relationship between the subject and the location
  • establishes location and tone
  • envision shot, plan your shoot, be efficient
setting

the setting is dark and is set in the woods, the woods is associated with a world of mystery and suspicion, anything can happen in the woods. The music is eerie and evokes an unsettling feeling when associated with a place such as the woods, together with the sound and the setting work together to put into the minds of the audience the idea that something is going to go wrong. This increased the emotional involvement the audience has with the film as they now feel even though they don't like the feeling they experience, they continue watching regardless to see if something bad truly happens, and if so what, getting an answer to why they felt uncomfortable during this film.

Suspense

  • suspense is the state of feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen
  • in the words of fiction, it is defined as a quality work of fiction that arouses expectation or uncertainty about what may happen
  • "in order to get suspense, you provide the audience with a certain amount of information, and leave the rest of it to their own imagination."
  • "suspense is about making and keeping promises, you say to the reader: keep reading and ill tell you how or why it's going to happen
  • we can drag out the suspense time by waiting until the last minute to finally deliver the promise
  • we can also create parralell plot lines by having two or more characters connected in some way heading on a collision course towards one another.
  • withholding information adds suspense
  • anxious music adds to the feelings that is known to be associated with suspense
  • slow down time - its a technique to add suspense
AS level level media studies: exemption
  • the clock in the eye shows time going by and being the focus of the shot, seeing that that too is what the character is keeping a lookout for.
  • the ticking sound evokes a feeling of something being set on timer, as if we are being counted down to something
  • the shaking camera adds to the tension because it conveys something being wrong.
  • the lack of music also makes it feel like something is off
  • when the characters look at each other then something else in the distance, it creates a connection and the audience is enticed to want to find out what the connection is.
